Did you know that Cabell County residents (birth to five years) are eligible for one free book per month that is directly mailed to his/her home? Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in conjunction with Cabell County Public Library does just that.

Here’s an excerpt that explains a bit more about this amazing program: “In 1995, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee, USA. Dolly’s vision was to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month. By mailing high quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes, she wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income.”

This program is so simple. You log on and fill out the appropriate information then wait for your book to arrive each month. The books are aimed at fostering, “Love of reading and learning; regard for diversity of people, their roles, culture, and environment; promotion of self-esteem and confidence, appreciation of art and aesthetics. Each series of books should contain certain characteristics specific to their age appropriateness including.”

My daughter loves getting a special present in the mail each month. In addition, it is a reminder for me to slow down and spend some special one on one time with her looking over and enjoying the newly arrived book.
